Gejzer to rodzaj gorącego źródła, które gwałtownie wyrzuca słup wody i pary wodnej o temperaturze wrzenia. Woda z gejzerów ogrzewana jest w procesie hydrotermalnym przez magmę zalegającą kilka kilometrów pod powierzchnią ziemi. Wybuchy gejzerów są dość regularne, ale dla każdego źródła odstępy pomiędzy kolejnymi wybuchami są inne. Woda może być wyrzucana na wysokość nawet 30-70 m. Przekonałam się na własne oczy co tak naprawdę chodzi. Ten tu w Kaliforni, a dokładnie w mieście Calistoga (moje Danville jest na środku u dołu),
jak trzy pozostałe ma nazwę "Old faithful" która dosłownie oznacza „stary wierny”, odzwierciedla fakt, że erupcje gejzera są dość dokładnie przewidywalne.Taka ciepła fontanna, która trwa kilka minut. Na szczęście nie musiałam na wybuch tegoż gejzeru długo czekać, bo tryskał co około 10 minut. Za wejście trzeba było zapłacić (a jakże) 14 dolarów, i tyle też minut można tam pobyć, zanim człowiek się nie zacznie nudzić. Ale jak się jest w okolicy, to można pojechać. Akurat w zagrodzie z kozami urodziło się małe 4 dni wcześniej, oczywiście bardziej piszczałam na zwierzę, niż na wodę.

The Old Faithful Geyser of California is one of three geysers in the world with the designation "old faithful." These are the geysers that perform at regular intervals. Water for the Old Faithful Geyser of California comes from an underground river. When this water flows over the hot molten magma deep in the earth, it boils and expands and is collected in large cavities. Under tremendous pressure from the heat, and assisted by a constriction of the passage upward, the superheated water is forced through the fissures and fractures and erupts with an outpouring of steam followed by a fulmination of hot dancing water. Under normal conditions, the water, the heat and the underground structure all remain constant and for this reason Old Faithful erupts regularly. Conditions which cause deviations from the normal pattern seem to relate to earthquakes. The Old Faithful Geyser of California is proving itself a predictor of quakes. About every 30 minutes, visitors to the Old Faithful Geyser of California are treated to an eruption of steam and scalding water spraying 60 to 100 feet in the air. There are only two other "old faithful" geysers in the world that have earned the title due to their regular eruptions. This geyser has also proven itself to be a good predictor of earthquakes. When the geyser's show is delayed or diminished, an earthquake is likely within the next couple of weeks in the 500 miles surrounding the geyser. I went to see this geyser, which costed 14 $ for entrance and I had fun for around 10 minutes. They had there a baby goat that was born 4 days ago and I think that was better than water.
Jak widać, są na świecie jeszcze dwa inne take gejzery. Drugi, w Yellowstone zobacze już za półtora miesiąca.
