Monument Valley (w języku navajo- Dolina Skał) – dolina położona na granicy stanów Utah i Arizona w USA wewnątrz rezerwatu Indian Navajo. Monument Valley stała się sławna dzięki westernom Johna Forda.Ta gigantyczna dolina położona na granicy dwóch stanów, Utah i Arizony, przytłacza swoim pięknem i wielkością. Kruche skały z czerwonego piaskowca wznoszące się na ponad 200 m, niepowtarzalne formacje, wyjątkowa roślinność i błękitne niebo zawieszone wysoko ponad głowami to widoki zapierające dech w piersiach każdego turysty. Monument Valley nie jest zwykłym parkiem narodowy. To rezerwat Indian Navajo, święte miejsce. Jechałam do tego miejsca nie wiedząc czego oczekiwać, a tu okazało się, że to wspaniała i piękna okolica, z wielkimi skałami i nie mniej słynnymi widokami. Miałam wrażenie, że już gdzieś to miejsce wiedziałam i nie mogłam skojarzyć skąd, ale po przeszukaniu internetu, odpowiedzi mam multum. Zdecydowanie to miejsce polecam!

Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona-Utah state line. The twin buttes of Monument Valley ("the Mittens"), the "Totem Pole", and the Ear of the Wind arch, among other features, have developed iconic status. They have appeared in many television programs, commercials, and Hollywood movies, especially Westerns. It has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films, and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West." Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. It is perhaps most famous for its use in many John Ford films and recently the popular United Kingdom television show Doctor Who in the two episodes "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon". Going there, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the view were awesome! And I had this feeling that I saw this place before.. So I looked up online and it turned out I know it very good!

• "Thelma i Louise" nakręcone przez Ridleya Scotta w 1991 były nagrywane w Monument Valley a także w Parku Narodowym Canyonlands, w którym też byłam./  Ridley Scott's 1991 film Thelma & Louise features some shots of Monument Valley, as well as Canyonlands National Park, in its latter half.

• W bajce "Auta" z 2006 roku, przejażdżka dla samochodów jest inspirowana Monument Valley w nazwie "Ornament Valley"/  In Cars (2006), a spoof of Monument Valley called "Ornament Valley" is shown as a once-popular side trip for cars entering Radiator Springs from U.S. Route 66.

• Inspiracją do stworzenia pustyni na której kojot ściga Strusia Pędziwiatra jest oczywisty Monument Valley/ The rugged desert scenery for the Coyote and Road Runner cartoons clearly takes much of its inspiration from Monument Valley.

• Słynna reklama z 1950 papierosów Marlboro /The implied association with John Wayne's tough, macho character made the buttes a natural choice as the background for the Marlboro Man in the marketing of Marlboro-brand cigarettes from the 1950s

• Produkcja bardzo popularnego i bardzo dobrego zresztą serialu "Breaking Bad" była wielokrotnie kręcona na terytorium Indian na tym terenie. / Set and produced in Albuquerque, the phenomenally popular AMC series "Breaking Bad", has filmed on Indian territory numerous times.

"Dyliżans"/ Stagecoach (1939)

Akcja westernu rozgrywa się w 1885 roku. W dyliżansie zdążającym do Nowego Meksyku jedzie kilku podróżnych. Dołącza do nich ścigany przez prawo Ringo Kid, szukający na bandytach odwetu za śmierć rodziny. Droga staje się coraz bardziej niebezpieczna. Pewnego dnia atakują ich Indianie. W obliczu niebezpieczeństwa każdy z pasażerów odkrywa swą prawdziwą twarz. 'Dyliżans" to pierwszy film Johna Forda z 10 nakręconych w Monument Valley. To właśnie ten reżyser dał początek karierze słynnego Johna Wayne'a.

John Ford was a veteran director who had worked in many genres, but Stagecoach was the beginning of the career for which he is remembered. It was the first of 10 films Ford shot in Monument Valley, Ford's first western since the introduction of sound in films, and featured John Wayne in his breakthrough role. A popular lookout point is named in his honor as "John Ford's Point". It was used by Ford in a scene from The Searchers where an American Indian village is attacked.

Henry Fonda starred as Wyatt Earp in this Ford-directed western. The story is said to take place in and around Tombstone, Arizona, which is actually some 500 miles to the south of Monument Valley.

Jedyny film nakręcony przez Forda w latach '50. Został on okrzykniętym najlepszym westernem wszechczasów przez Amerykański Instytut Filmowy w 2008 roku.

The only Western made by Ford during the '50s, The Searchers was named the greatest western of all time by the American Film Institute in 2008.

"Jak zdobyto dziki zachód"/ How the West Was Won (1962)

Opowiedziana z wielkim rozmachem i podzielona na segmenty saga o pionierach Dzikiego Zachodu. Zebulon Prescott wraz ze swoją rodziną wyrusza w roku 1800 z Nowego Jorku szukać swojego miejsca dla siebie, gdzieś na Dzikim Zachodzie. Po wielu latach, trudnosciach i walce docierają w końcu na miejsce.

"Akcja na Eigerze"/  The Eiger Sanction (1975)

Były, zawodowy morderca zamierza schwytać zabójcę swojego przyjaciela. Bierze więc udział w wyprawie alpinistów, wśród których znajduje się oprawca. Słynna scena na górze skały o nazwie "Totem Pole" sprawiła, że aktorzy byli ostatnimi ludźmi, którzy mogli się na nią wspiąć- od tego czasu wspinaczka tam jest zakazana.

Star/director Clint Eastwood and co-star George Kennedy shot a memorable scene atop the "Totem Pole" rock formation- and were among the last people allowed on it. It's now off limits to climbers since the movie was filmed here.

"W krzywym zwierciadle: wakacje" /National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wraz z żoną Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) i dziećmi postanawia wyruszyć na wakacje marzeń do wesołego miasteczka Walley World. Nie przerażają ich ani odległość do pokonania, ani przeszkody piętrzące się na ich drodze. W Monument Valley jest kręcona scena, w której auto rodziny wybija się na rampie i leci 50 yardów (45 metrów).

Harold Ramis' film National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) features footage of Monument Valley. Family man Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his brood are lost in the desert when he blows through a ROAD CLOSED sign and the Family Truckster launches off a ramp. "Dad, you must have jumped this thing about 50 yards!" his son Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) says. Clark replies, "That's nothing to be proud of, Rusty," then mutters under his breath, proudly, "...50 yards..."

A full-scale drive-in theater used in the movie was built solely for the filming, and demolished after the movie wrapped. No films were ever shown there. Marty McFly drives from 1955 to 1885 from a drive-in theatre set at the Valley's base.

"Forrest Gump" (1994)

Scena z Monument Valley w tle z filmu Forrest Gump jest sceną, w której bohater zatrzymuję się po trzy letnim biegu przez Amerykę i decyduję, że już dalej biegł nie będzie. Zostawia w tle tłum, a biegnie przez istniejącą drogę 163 (patrzcie niżej!).
